What To Expect

Hopetoun House
As one of the nation’s largest stately homes, Hopetoun (or shall we say Ellesmere!) House offered a backdrop for many Outlander scenes.

Midhope Castle
Ruined 15th century tower house located within the grounds of Hopetoun House was used for the external shots for the family home of Jamie Fraser, Lallybroch.

Blackness Castle
Jutting out into the Firth of Forth, this "ship that never sailed", is a 15th century fortress used as Black Jack Randalls head quarters at Fort William.

Linlithgow Palace
Famous for being the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scotts, this shell of a palace was used as Wentworth Prison as well as in numerous scenes in the new Netflix movie about King Robert de Bruce, Outlaw King.

Doune Castle
Originally the home to The Duke of Albany and the Earls of Moray now is one of, if not the most famous film locations in Scotland.

Used for nearly all of the castle scenes in Monty Pythons "Holy Grail" and Elizabeth Taylors "Ivanhoe" it is now better known as the original setting for Winterfell Castle in the Game of Thrones and Castle Leoch, the clan home of the Mackenzie's in Outlander.

As this historical living museum is used as the fictional town of Crainsmuir, you can wander Clare's herb garden and around the towns mercat cross.
